![]() Places like target and gas station convenience stores have to promise 12 to 15 dollars an hour because no one ever grew up dreaming of working at a convenience store, so money has to be the draw. They can afford to keep doing this because there are plenty of high school and college students who have always dreamed of working at a bookstore and are willing to take 9 an hour to fulfill that dream. The other, bigger issue is what I jokingly call the "passion tax." BN pays 9 dollars an hour starting off, which is pretty bad compared to most other retail positions. Notably, though, everyone working here hates this and there's big hope that the new CEO might change this. You'll gradually see more and more responsibilities without any raises/advancements outside of being treated with more respect, etc.Ĭhain-specific issues include the fact that bn corporate axed all full-time positions below that of supervisor, so you have very little hope of seeing promotion in your time working here. You will be constantly busy, and will have to l earn how to pretend to be busy even if there's nothing to do, because retail work is just like that. There are a fair bit of cons, but I'll be honest and admit that a lot of them are not unique to bn, but are cons of retail as a whole. I've been with bn for around a year and a half, and in the bookselling biz as a whole for around 3 years now.Īs far as pros go, this is definitely the nicest set of coworkers I've ever had, and a 40% employee discount is nothing to sneeze at.
